See Specials for more details In a series of journeys lasting from 24 hours to a fortnight, the Pride of Africa links some of Africa's greatest destinations from Cape Town at the tip of Africa to Dar-Es-Salaam in Tanzania, from scenic splendours as diverse as the game reserves of Mpumalanga to the Victoria Falls, from the desert landscapes of Namibia and the stark beauty of the Karoo to the lush canefields of KwaZulu-Natal and the magnificent Garden Route along the Cape South Coast. ROVOS AIR - CLASSIC PLANES In April 2001, Rovos Rail purchased two splendid Convair 440 aeroplanes from an operator in Bolivia. The planes were flown by their own crew over the Atlantic Ocean to their new home in South Africa.Built in 1954 the first owner was the US Airforce, which based them in Texas until 1992. Then followed their 8-year tour of duty in Cochabamba at 8 500ft on contract to the Bolivian airlines.The restoration of the air-conditioned aircraft to Rovos standards was achieved in Pietersburg and proved easier than expected due to the exceptionally good condition of the airframe. Fitted with the Pratt & Whitney 2800 radial engines the aircraft has a pleasing power to weight ratio, providing the sort of performance demanded by their well-qualified pilots. Carrying 44 passengers, the aircraft is pressurized and cruises comfortably at 400km per hour (220 knots).Onboard service by capable staff will be of usual high standard, complemented by the facilities of an efficient and comprehensive galley. The aircraft is used to convey train passengers from Pietersburg to Victoria Falls in Zambia on the scheduled Rovos Rail Pretoria to Victoria Falls journeys as well as the scheduled air safaris.
