Your luxury train journey takes 14 days, as you traverse stretches of South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Zambia, and Tanzania. You epic journey begins in Cape Town, and takes you to historic Matjiesfontein, then onto the diamond town of Kimberley, before continuing to Pretoria. From here you travel to the Madikwe Game Reserve, for a relaxed 2 night stay. Then it’s your first border crossing at the Train takes you into Botswana, and then on to the town of Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe, home of the magnificent Waterfall. Next you cross the famed Zambezi River, over the bridge that was part of the route intended to link the Cape to Cairo, at the beginning of the 20th Century. During your leisurely trip through Zambia, you have the chance to enjoy a bush walk and a visit to Chisimba Falls. Then you climb upwards to the border with Tanzania, which is close to the mid-point between two of the Great Rift Valley lakes. Next is the descent into the Great Rift Valley itself… and your last day of the Safari you pass through part of the vast Selous Game Reserve, before arriving at the coastal town of Dar es Salaam – gateway to Zanzibar and beyond. * Please note that depending upon the railway’s capacity this journey could be routed northwards through Beitbridge and Zimbabwe.

Cape Town - Dar es Salaam
Day 1: Depart Cape Town
Your unique Train Safari starts at 11h00 this morning, with your departure from Cape Town Station. Enjoy exploring the Train as you glide along at a stately pace. There is the first of many incredible lunches to enjoy, before relaxing in the Observation Car or the privacy of your Suite. The Train arrives at historic Matjiesfontein at 18h00, and there is time to explore this village – which seems frozen in the Victorian Era. Enjoy a sumptuous dinner and overnight on the train. Day 2: Kimberley Big Hole
After traversing the Karoo you arrive in Kimberley at 14h00 – in time for a tour of the Diamond Mine Museum and the neighbouring Big Hole (a world beating man-made excavation) – which still manages to fascinate. The train leaves Kimberley at 16h00, and as you pass a nearby shallow lake, you have the chance to see a huge flock of Lesser Flamingo…
Day 3: Pretoria City Tour
You glide into Capital Park Station, Pretoria, at 11h30 this morning. Enjoy a delicious lunch at the station (privately owned and run by Rovos Rail), before heading out on a City Tour. Return to the train, and departure for the border town of Zeerust at 18h00.
Day 4: Tau Game Lodge Safari
After a leisurely breakfast, you leave the train at Zeerust at 11h00, for your 2 night stay at Tau Game Lodge in the malaria-free Madikwe Game Reserve. Enjoy afternoon and morning game drives, and see some of the magnificent wild life from which the area is known. Enjoy 2 relaxing nights at the Lodge.
Day 6: Botswana
You have a last, early morning, game drive, before returning to Zeerust and boarding the Train, which departs at 12h00 for the border, and the customs and immigration formalities. You travel through part of Botswana today, enjoying some of the different scenery en route to Zimbabwe.
Day 7: Zimbabwe
This morning you cross another border and are now in Zimbabwe, heading towards the beautiful little town of Victoria Falls. Enjoy lectures by the on-board historian.
Day 8: Victoria Falls
In the late morning you arrive at the small and unique ‘station’ at Victoria Falls, and you ‘transfer’ to the Hotel (it was original built at the station’s Hotel), where you enjoy a delightful lunch. After time to explore the beautiful grounds, enjoy a sunset cruise on the Zambezi River from 16h00, which is followed by dinner and overnight at the Victoria Falls Hotel.
Day 9: Day at Leisure in Victoria Falls
Enjoy a day at leisure as you get to choose from a number of excursions and activities - such as a tour the Falls, a round of golf, a scenic helicopter ride, White Water Rafting, or a Tour of the Falls… to name but a few. The train departs at 16h00 for Zimbabwe/Zambia border formalities.
Day 10: Lusaka
Your morning trip takes you from Livingstone to Zambia’s capital of Lusaka, which you pass through as you enjoy lunch. You have a leisurely day today, and there are more lectures by the on-board historian.
Day 11: Zambia
Your route takes you north east today, as you pass through the towns of Serenje and Mpika en route to Kasama. This is a leisurely day, as you enjoy the passing scenery and learn more about the area and your route in lectures by the on-board historian.
Day 12: Bush Walk
Enjoy breakfast before departing at 08h00 at Kasama for a bush walk at Chisimba Falls; return to the Train in time for lunch, as you head towards the town of Nakonde, and onwards to Tunduma for the formalities as you travel into Tanzania.
Day 13: Selous Game Reserve
You disembark Makambako at 10h00 this morning to enjoy the scenery, before the descent of the spectacular pass to Mlimba. Your journey then takes you through to the famed Selous Game Reserve... enjoy the passing scenery and the chance to see some wildlife. There are also on going lectures by the on-board historian.
Day 14: Dar Es Salaam
Your wonderful Train and Safari adventure ends upon your arrival at Dar es Salaam’s Tazara Station at 10h00 this morning, allowing you time for your onward arrangements…
Dar Es Salaam - Cape Town
Day 1: Dar Es Salaam Departure
Your luxury train journey starts at Tazara Station at 10h00 when you board the Rovos Rail Train. Settle-in before the train departs at 12h00. An overnight in Dar es Salaam before the start of the journey is recommended, and there are a number of good hotels to choose from.
Day 2: Selous Game Reserve
Today’s itinerary takes you through part of the northern section of the Selous Game Reserve – one of the biggest conservation areas in the world. You arrive at the town of Makambako at 14h00, after passing through some fascinating scenery. The train then continues onwards towards the Zambian border.
Day 3: Chisimba Falls
Your day starts at 06h00 as you arrive at the Tunduma border post, before crossing over to Nakonde for Zambian border formalities. Enjoy an excellent lunch on the train, before arriving at Kasama at 14.00 – from here you enjoy an excursion to Chisimba Falls.
Day 4: Zambia
Today’s journey continues south westwards towards Lusaka, Zambia’s Capital. By 12h00 you pass through the town of Serenje. The train’s on-board historian has some lectures planned for you.
Day 5: Lusaka
Your itinerary takes you through Lusaka at 10h00 this morning. Enjoy a leisurely day on the train, with more fascinating lectures by the train’s historian.
Day 6: Victoria Falls, Sunset Cruise
By 12h00 today you arrive at the border for the border formalities as you pass from Zambia’s Livingstone to Zimbabwe’s Victoria Falls, across a bridge which was opened in 1905 specifically for trains. You are then transferred to the iconic Victoria Falls Hotel for your night’s accommodation. Enjoy a 16h00 sunset cruise on the Zambezi River, before an excellent dinner at the Hotel
Day 7: Day at Leisure in Victoria Falls
Your day is leisure, and you have the choice of a number of excursions and activities – such as a Tour of Falls, Flight of the Angels, white-water rafting, round of golf and much more! At 16h00 the train departs Victoria Falls Station.
Day 8: Botswana
This morning you bypass Bulawayo en route to the border crossing at Plumtree. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are enjoyed on board the train. This afternoon you cross over the border to Botswana.
Day 9: Tau Game Lodge Safari
By 10h00 you arrive in Gaborone, just 20 kilometres from the border with South Africa. After crossing the border, you are transferred to Tau Game Lodge for full-board two-night stay, including game drives. Explore this beautiful Madikwe Game Reserve during your extensive game drives.
Day 11: Safari
Your 2 night stay finishes this morning with an early game drive, before returning to the Train for a 12h30 departure from Zeerust.
Day 12: Pretoria City Tour
The itinerary takes you the Capital Park Station in Pretoria, where you arrive by lunch-time. Enjoy a Light lunch and city tour, before departing at 15h00 for the last couple of days of your epic journey.
Day 13: Kimberley Big Hole
You arrive at 09h45 in Kimberley – the historic centre of diamond mining in South Africa. There is a time for a tour of the Big Hole and Diamond Mine Museum, before boarding the train for the journey to the Winelands and Cape Town.
Day 14: Cape Town
After breakfast this morning, depart the train at 08h30 for a short visit to the historic village of Matjiesfontein. Enjoy a last lunch on the train, before arriving at Cape Town Station at 18h00.
